Chapter 12

Kia

Lord, I am so happy it’s Friday. Since I started at the hospital Wednesday, it has been case after case. The first was a two-car accident. A twelve-year-old boy was brought in with a broken femur. A simple case, yes, but I hate to see the young one’s in pain.

By the time I finished my rounds, I was ready to go home. The only two things I want right now are my shower and my bed. Going into the doctor’s locker room, I go straight over to mine, enter the code to unlock it and remove the pad lock.

Sliding out of my lab coat I grab my backpack just as Brogan enters my mind. I’ve kept any interaction with Brogan pretty much nonexistent over the last week. The way I saw it, we could be neighbors and give a quick wave of hello, other than that, I draw the line. I refuse to let him back in my life only for him to dictate how I’m supposed to do things. Brogan must have forgotten about the person he met years ago. Yes, after my ordeal I let him take over because I felt safe with him until one day I grabbed the bulls by the horns and steered my life in the way I wanted it to go.

I’m happy with the way things turned out. I can stand on my own without Brogan O’Rourke taking over and interfering. I’m okay with the two of us just being friends. I just wish my heart and lady parts were on the same page as my logic of reasoning.

When Walter came over earlier this week, my plan was to tell him that we needed to slow down on our relationship. Not because of Brogan but because I needed some time to get my head straight. I’m in a new city, about to start a new demanding job, and so I’m not sure about our relationship or where I want it to go. As we sat on the couch, I was about to explain how I was feeling but when he started talking about the cases he had dealt with over the last forty-eight hours, the subject left my mind. I thought about it later that night as I lay in bed. Me and Walter’s relationship had been doing good. Even when we had to deal with living in different states. Despite the distance, I decided to not only move here for the new position but also to be closer to him.

“Not bad for your first few days, huh?,” Walter asks, entering the locker room.

“Not at all but I’m glad it’s over,” I reply, throwing my backpack over my shoulder.

Walter leans against the locker next to mine, folding his arms over his chest. “So, what are you about to get into?”

Sighing, I take my time as I close the door to my locker and replace the padlock. I face him, then answer, “A shower, then my bed.”

Walter’s arms fall. “Kia, come on. This is your second weekend in Dallas.
